Oops! Gorilla’s Big Baby Secret!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Once upon a time in an exciting zoo called Columbus Zoo, there lived a gorilla named Sully. Now, Sully had been living there since 2019, and everyone at the zoo thought she was a strong and handsome male gorilla for four whole years!

But guess what? Surprise, surprise! Sully was actually a girl gorilla all along! How surprising is that?

Gorilla Surprise: A Girl’s Tale

  • One wonderful day, the zookeepers were going about their usual business when they saw something unbelievable. Sully had a tiny, adorable baby gorilla with her! Can you believe it? The little baby gorilla looked healthy and happy, and Sully was being an excellent mommy to her new baby.
  • You see, the zookeepers hadn’t known that Sully was a girl because gorillas at a young age don’t look much different from each other. It’s like trying to guess if your best friend is a boy or a girl when they’re wearing a big, baggy costume. It can be tricky!
  • Sully was already eight years old, which is old enough for gorillas to have babies, but she was still too young to show signs of being a girl gorilla. It’s like trying to tell if someone is a grown-up just by looking at them, but they still look like a kid.
  • The zookeepers were surprised, but they were also happy because this unexpected baby was really important for gorilla conservation. You know what conservation means, right? It’s like taking care of and protecting special animals like gorillas so they can keep living happily and safely.
  • Gorillas are fascinating creatures because they don’t show signs of being pregnant like humans do. Their tummies are big, so it’s like they always look a little round, even when they’re going to have a baby! And guess what? Baby gorillas are so tiny compared to human babies! It’s like having a teeny-tiny baby doll!
  • The zookeepers were super thrilled to welcome this baby gorilla into the world. Can you believe it? She was the 34th gorilla born at Columbus Zoo since 1956! That’s a lot of gorilla babies, isn’t it? Columbus Zoo is like a big gorilla family.
  • But there was one little thing they needed to do to make sure. They needed to find out who the baby gorilla’s daddy was! And how did they do that? Well, they did something really cool called DNA tests. It’s like being a detective and using special tools to find out secrets about someone. Exciting, right?
  • Now, Sully lives with a troop, and their leader is a big, strong gorilla called Mac. Mac is 39 years old, and he’s like the king of the gorillas at Columbus Zoo. He also has two other young gorilla friends named Kamoli, who is 10 years old, and JJ, who is six.
  • Even with the funny mix-up with Sully, the zookeepers were very sure that the new baby gorilla was a girl. They checked and checked again! They even sent photographs to a gorilla expert at another zoo, just to be extra sure. And guess what? The expert agreed too! It’s a girl!
  • So, in conclusion, Sully the gorilla surprised everyone by being a girl gorilla and having a beautiful baby girl of her own. The zookeepers were over the moon with joy, and they knew that this precious baby was essential for keeping gorillas safe and happy. And they all lived comically ever after, taking care of their wonderful gorilla family at Columbus Zoo.
