Scientists plan to turn Earth into an observatory!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Scientists are working on a plan to turn the whole Earth into a vast observatory. Communication cables reach overseas and wind through the ground so that we can control our communication systems.

Experts believe that this network could also be used to see the Earth’s surface from below.

What is an observatory?

Scientists can keep an eye on the sky, the weather, and other events from an observatory.

The existing 1.2 million kilometres of communications cable could be used with satellites and other tools to keep an eye on the whole planet.

In addition to monitoring natural phenomena such as earthquakes and storms, as well as whales and ships travelling across the ocean.

Important Details

  • “This could be a global observatory in the field of Ocean-Earth sciences,” say the experts.
  • With the help of communication cables with advanced sensing technology, monitoring could be done.
  • Movement can be measured by picking up and interpreting any flexes in the cable that are induced by sound waves or real waves.
  • Members of this team followed whales across the Arctic region to show this.
  • Researchers were able to hear more than 800 whale calls by using a cable that went underwater.
  • In addition, they found out that a big storm was more than 10,000 km away.
  • All of this is possible because of advanced sensing systems.
  • With advancements in technology, experts can now measure and keep an eye on hearing signals from up to 100 to 200 kilometres away.
  • Since there would be so much wiring, experts believe there is a good chance that a lot of new discoveries will be made.
