Toughest material on Earth!

Toughest material on Earth!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Researchers have shown that a metal alloy made of chromium, cobalt, and nickel is the hardest substance on Earth. This alloy is more durable than graphene by more than a hundred times.

What are alloys?

Alloys are metals produced by combining two or more metals.

What is Graphene?

Graphene is the building block of graphite.

What is megapascal?

A basic unit used to measure pressure or tension.

Key facts!

  • In a new study, researchers tested the fracture resistance of the ultra-tough alloy by exposing it to extremely cold temperatures.
  • Their goal was to determine how well the material holds up under stress.
  • Scientists observed that this alloy only became tougher and more resistant to cracks as temperatures dropped.
  • This discovery came as a result of the team’s investigation into the relationship between temperature and the behaviour of the alloy.
  • According to the authors of the study, this very high resistance to fracture stands in stark contrast to the behaviour of most materials.
  • The majority of materials when exposed to freezing temperatures only become more brittle.
  • Aircraft aluminium alloys are 35 megapascals per metre tough.
  • In contrast, this material possesses a hardness that ranges between 450 and 500 megapascals per metre.
  • A strong material like this could be used for a lot of different things, like building space infrastructure.
  • In addition to making containers that can be used to make clean energy here on Earth.
  • However, nickel and cobalt are excessively expensive components.
  • So this limits the applicability of the alloy to the laboratory for the foreseeable future.
