Who Really Was Veerappan?

Recommended for Middle Grades

Greetings, restless wanderer of words! Get ready to dive into the thrilling world of “The Hunt for Veerappan”! This exciting Netflix docu-series takes you on an adventure through history, with lots of action, laughs, and heartwarming moments.

So, who was Veerappan? He was a famous forest brigand, a bit like a bad guy from the movies, who caused quite a stir in the 1990s. The show starts with his wife, Muthulakshmi, talking about him, and boy, she still thinks he was quite the hero!

Outlaw Chronicles

  • Now, Veerappan’s life was full of mischief and mayhem. He started as a poacher, killing elephants for ivory. Then he got into smuggling sandalwood and even kidnapping for ransom! But hold on, the series mostly focuses on interviews with people who knew him during this time, like his wife, gang members, and even police officers.
  • His wife shares a funny story about how they got together when she was just 15! Can you imagine falling for a gun-toting guy in his late 30s? Well, she did, and she’s still in awe of him years after his death. She thinks most of his actions were just reactions to what others did to him.
  • Now, Veerappan knew the forests like the back of his hand, and he claimed to have shot an elephant when he was only 12! Talk about starting young. He had a gang, and he was quite the terror, let me tell you!
  • The show also tells us about the Special Task Force (STF) formed by both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to catch him. It was like a real-life cat and mouse chase! But even though some people thought of him as a forest angel or a king, he was no Robin Hood. He could be pretty stingy and not very kind to the poor villagers caught up in his schemes.
  • Now, things get really intense in the series when they talk about the brutal violence on both sides. Veerappan and his gang were involved in some gruesome acts, like beheading a forest officer. It’s like a dance of death, but it’s also scary to see how police brutality added to the horror.
  • The show also sheds light on how Veerappan got involved with extremist groups and kidnapped a famous actor. He was trying to be a leader of the masses, but deep down, he probably wanted a normal life.
  • In the end, the series talks about how the police finally got him, but some people think it was all planned. Who knows? The truth is still a mystery.
  • Throughout the four episodes, the show keeps you hooked with its great storytelling and visuals, even though it sometimes comes close to worshiping the bad guy! But hey, let’s not forget, he was pure evil.
  • So, what’s the lesson here? Well, even though Veerappan was a fearsome criminal, there’s always more to the story than what meets the eye. And sometimes, the truth is stranger than fiction!
  • Now, go grab some popcorn and watch “The Hunt for Veerappan” on Netflix. But remember, it’s a real-life story, so be ready for some emotional moments too. Happy watching!
