Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Yeva’s a brave young girl who went through a challenging and life-changing experience. At the tender age of 12, she had to escape her home country, Ukraine, because of the Russian invasion.

Yeva’s powerful recollections of her journey will soon be published in a book called “You Don’t Know What War Is: The Diary of a Young Girl from Ukraine.” In her book, Yeva wants to help people all around the world understand the true meaning of war and the struggles faced by the people of Ukraine.

And the best part is, a portion of the money earned from the book will be used to support groups that help refugees in Ukraine.

Yeva’s story

  • Yeva’s story begins with her 12th birthday, which happened shortly before the Russian invasion in 2021. When the bombings started, Yeva and her grandma found a safe hiding place in their apartment in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
  • Yeva’s parents were divorced, so her grandma took care of her since she was a little girl. In her book, Yeva describes the terrifying moments they had to endure while seeking shelter underground during the bombings. They also had to embark on a dangerous journey to West Ukraine, facing many challenges along the way.
  • One thing that surprised Yeva was why the Russians would attack her and her fellow Ukrainians, considering she spoke their language and followed many of their customs.
  • Despite the confusion, Yeva and her dear grandmother managed to find refuge in a crowded center for refugees in Hungary. Sadly, several European countries refused to let them in, which made their search for safety even harder.
  • Yeva’s book shows us the strength and courage she displayed as she began building a new life in a foreign land. She hopes that one day she will be able to return to her homeland.
  • Her story teaches us about the hardships faced by people who are forced to leave their homes because of war. Yeva wants everyone to understand the true meaning of war, as it is not just a word but something that brings immense pain and suffering.
  • In conclusion, Yeva Skalietska’s book, “You Don’t Know What War Is: The Diary of a Young Girl from Ukraine,” tells the powerful story of her escape from the Russian invasion. Through her recollections, Yeva aims to raise awareness about the struggles faced by the people of Ukraine during war.
  • Union Square, the publisher of her book, will contribute a part of the revenues to organizations that assist refugees in Ukraine. Yeva’s bravery and resilience inspire us to appreciate the importance of peace and to support those who have been affected by war.
