Aruna Roy – Human Rights Hero

The Seeds of Change

Listen to the autobiography

Aruna Roy, a name synonymous with activism in India, embarked on a remarkable journey that began in the corridors of power. Once a civil servant, Aruna chose a path less traveled in 1975, trading her government office for the dusty roads of Rajasthan’s rural landscape. This bold step marked the beginning of her life-long commitment to working alongside the rural poor.

In the heart of Rajasthan’s Devdungri district, a spark was ignited. Aruna, along with her colleagues Nikhil Dey, Shankar Singh, and local community members, founded the MKSS in 1990. This was not just an organization but a beacon of hope for the oppressed workers and peasants. Here, she proved that unity can bring about substantial change.

Aruna’s relentless efforts bore fruit in 2005 with the enactment of the Right to Information Law. This wasn’t just a piece of legislation; it was a powerful tool handed over to the common man. With this, Aruna demonstrated that true democracy lies in transparency and the power of information.

Expanding Horizons

Between 2004-06 and 2010-13, Aruna Roy served on India’s National Advisory Council, where she played a pivotal role in shaping national policies. Her contributions were crucial in the passage of groundbreaking legislations like the Right to Information and the Right to Employment laws.

The RTI law, a significant achievement of Aruna and her team, became a lifeline for millions seeking transparency. Studies reveal an astounding 8 million RTI applications filed yearly, showcasing the law’s impact on ordinary citizens’ lives.

Aruna’s activism extends beyond the RTI. She is a prominent figure in numerous democratic struggles and campaigns, fighting tirelessly for the marginalized. Her role as the President of the National Federation of Indian Women highlights her commitment to women’s empowerment and social justice.

Recognition and Legacy

Aruna Roy’s contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. Her shelves hold prestigious awards like the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2000), the Nani Palkiwala Award, and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award (2010). In 2011, TIME Magazine listed her among the 100 most influential people globally, a testament to her global impact.

Aruna’s journey began with a postgraduate degree in English literature and a brief stint as a teacher. But her heart was in the fields of Rajasthan, where she chose to make a difference. This transition from academia to grassroots activism is a story of courage and conviction.

Today, Aruna Roy continues her fight against corruption and for government transparency. Her story is not just about the changes she has made but about the countless lives she has inspired. Aruna’s journey teaches us that one individual’s determination can ignite a revolution, bringing light to the darkest corners of society.

Aruna Roy’s story is a heartwarming tale of courage, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to social justice. Her life reminds us that change is possible when we dare to dream big and work tirelessly towards that dream. Through her efforts, Aruna has not just changed policies but has transformed lives, proving that true heroes don’t always wear capes; sometimes, they carry the hopes of millions in their indomitable spirit.
