Children's Day Talk - Nita Arora, Sri Venkateshwar International School

Children’s Day Talk – Nita Arora, Sri Venkateshwar International School

Children’s Day Talk – Nita Arora, Sri Venkateshwar International School, Delhi

Each child is special. Their uniqueness lies, as much as in their skills and talents, as in their questions, imaginations and sense of wonder. Some children may be good in sports, some in arts, some in science or some in business. Some are orators, others dreamers, some loud and expressive, some shy and conservative. But each child has something special to offer to this world. So, we strongly believe that ‘Every Child is Special’.

The UN celebrates World Children’s Day on 20 November while in India, Children’s Day is celebrated on 14 November. This date is the birth anniversary of India’s First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru who believed that children are the real strength and foundation of a nation. We at Curious Times too believe that the holistic development of children is the first step in building a better world and we strive every day to do just that. We are also in constant engagement with the education community – students, teachers and educators. It is our cherished goal to make a meaningful contribution to the community by working and interacting with leaders in the field.

And so, this Children’s Day, Curious Times is delighted to bring you a special message from an eminent educator, Nita Arora. She is the Principal of Sri Venkateshwar International School, Delhi.

This is a short, edited excerpt of the interview. You can watch the whole interview below, after the excerpt.

Children are the most important beings in the lives of teachers and parents. So, the nation has to invest in them. They should be allowed to learn from our learnings and our mistakes. We must not hide our mistakes.

Learnings from my journey as an educator: When I was 10, I wanted to be a principal. That made me take more interest in school and pay much more attention to the teachers too. I observed how the teachers behaved and this made me see there are different types of teachers. When I started as a teacher, I realised that it was important to move around and connect with my students and this helped me build a bond with them. A parent once wanted me to discipline children by being strict with them but I tried to reason with them and I’m glad that worked out. I still have a strong bond with my first class.

I am always very inspired by the poet Kahlil Gibran. He says that children are there because life wanted to come. They are your children but they are not here for you and you need to let them have their own dreams and aims. Let’s not have our children fulfil our dreams.

We must make children understand that parents are their best friends. We must encourage them to share their problems with their parents because they will always be there for you. On the other hand, a teacher’s role is also to gently persuade parents to listen to their children and let them be who they are. For instance, I had a student who had more interest in visual arts but his parents wanted him to do the sciences instead. He was almost failing and so, I tried to convince his parents to let him do what he wanted. Thankfully, with some persuasion, the child could change his subjects and is flourishing in an art college now. And his parents are thankful that I persuaded them.

On the occasion of Children’s Day, share your message with your and your children on the Curious Times platform. Children, it is always important to follow the right path. Listen to your inner voice and do try to develop a lot of hobbies which will help a lot in life. Your family is your biggest support; you should love them. Always be respectful, be nice to others and forgive yourself if you make mistakes. Be kind to animals, love nature and do learn a language.

Many thanks to Nita Arora, Sri Venkateshwar International School, Delhi for sharing her thoughts on Curious Times.

Wishing Happy Children’s Day to all the students of Sri Venkateshwar International School, Delhi.
