Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.

So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Ms. Meera Mathur. She is the Principal of Delhi Public School Ghaziabad International. It is a school that has established systems to enable lifelong learning, self-development and improved performance for excellence all round.

Here is a short edited excerpt of the one-on-one conversation of Ms. Meera Mathur with Deepti Beri, Director at Curious Times. Also, watch the full video of the conversation at the end of this excerpt.

When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? I was always into role play; as a child, I enjoyed playing the role of a teacher. But I realised I really wanted to teach when I was in college. I enjoyed teaching my juniors and since then, I haven’t looked back. You want to empower children and guide them on their journey.

Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success? Initially, I had challenges with behavioural problems of children. But now, I would say, as the pandemic hit, technology became a challenge. We have to change our system overnight and shift to the online mode. We also wanted to help kids and parents overcome all the anxiety of the pandemic as many faced a lot of loss too. So, we introduced yoga, and more to help them manage their mental health. And the results were great and I am happy we overcame the challenges.

As a school, we are also a ‘fit-India’ school. We organised a number of online competitions on fitness which saw a lot of participants. We could reach out to so many people and that was wonderful.

What changes would you like to see in the field of Education? What role can the various stakeholders like the government, teachers, students and parents play in this? Share your message with the aspiring teachers and leaders of tomorrow. I wouldn’t really dare to advise people. But I can say that once school restarts, we will see how dynamics have changed. We have to make a paradigm shift in our way of transacting the curriculum. Last year, my organisation (a group of schools) came up with a curriculum design that focused on skills and competencies – art, music, sports. After that, the NEP came out and we felt justified in our vision and ideas. The government has also come up with ideas around vocational skills and we must look into that.

Education has changed and all stakeholders need to collaborate to make a difference. Everyone has to contribute to make education a success.

Share your message for your and Curious Times students. Treat your time at school as a time of discovery, self-discovery. Once you enter college you will have to make many choices – all these will depend on who you are. So, discover yourselves and don’t worry about a career. You will find your true calling. Choose a career not because you visualise yourself as something but because you enjoy it. School and college days are a memory of a lifetime.

As educators, it is our role to lead children to self-discovery.
