French writer Annie Ernaux wins this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy gave her the Nobel Prize because of “the courage and clinical accuracy with which she uncovers the roots, separations, and collective limitations of personal memory.”

• Ernaux, now 82 years old, began her literary career with autobiographical novels but switched to writing memoirs instead of fiction.
• The events in her life and the lives of others around her are chronicled in her more than 20 novels.
• They depict in a straightforward manner physical encounters, abortion, illness, and the passing of her parents.
• Ernaux’s work is frequently uncompromising and written in straightforward English.
