Cybercriminals target children’s games!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Have you ever heard of cybercriminals? They’re like the bad guys of the internet world, and they try to trick parents by targeting popular games that kids like to play. Why? Well, they want to infect the parent’s phone or computer. Sounds like something out of a spy movie, right?

Cyber Sneaks

  • So, let’s dive into this wacky world of cybercrime. Imagine this: in 2022, there were over 7 million attacks on popular games like Minecraft, Fortnite, and Apex Legends. That’s a whopping 57% more than the previous year, according to a super smart anti-virus software company. Those cybercriminals are upping their game, quite literally!

  • Now, here’s where it gets really sneaky. Kids often use their parent’s devices to play these games. And you know what? The bad guys want to steal credit card information and passwords from parents. But how do they do it? Well, they pretend to be the game itself and trick kids into downloading bad things. Yikes!

  • Let’s check out some key facts about these cyber tricksters. First, they make fake websites for popular games like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite, and Apex Legends. It’s like they’re building a whole world of deception! And guess what? In 2022 alone, there were over 800,000 fake websites for these games. That’s a whole lot of fakeness!

  • But wait, there’s more! Over 200,000 players actually downloaded more than 40,000 bad files that looked like real games. Can you believe it? It’s like getting a fake chocolate chip cookie instead of the real deal. Sneaky, sneaky!

  • Now, these bad guys aren’t just playing around. They trick kids by offering cheats and tutorials. They tell kids to turn off their antivirus software so that the bad files won’t be detected. It’s like asking you to turn off your superpower shield! And that’s when they pounce and steal information from your device. Even games for little kids like Poppy Playtime and Toca Living World weren’t spared. These cybercriminals don’t care how old you are, they’ll go after anyone!

  • So, always remember to be extra careful when playing games online, my friend. Cybercriminals are out there trying to get to your parent’s devices, but together, we can be smarter than them! Stay safe and keep on having fun in the digital world, while keeping those sneaky bad guys at bay.
