Hubble captures galaxy collision!

Recommended for Exploration

Hubble takes a picture of a beautiful ring of stars. The image is the result of two galaxies colliding head-on. Two galaxies in the constellation Eridanus were twisted and warped into a huge ring of bright stars.

This is because the gravitational forces between them are so strong.

This amazing picture was taken by the space telescope just when the galaxies were about to collide with each other.

Key facts!

  • The galaxies are in the constellation Eridanus, which is about 670 million light-years from Earth.
  • From the Southern Hemisphere, one could see the constellation.
  • The name for all of these galaxies as a group is Arp-Madore 417-391.
  • Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys took the new picture (ACS).
  • This camera was made to look for galaxies that were around when the universe was young.
  • Astronomers say, “Gravity has changed the shape of the two galaxies and warped them into a huge ring.”
  • This made it so that the centres of the two galaxies were right next to each other.
  • The Arp-Madore Catalog is a library with more than 6,000 photos of strange galaxies that have been seen in the southern skies.
  • The Arp-Madore 417-391 galaxy has been suggested by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a possible target for the James Webb Space Telescope to look at in the far future.
