NASA prepares for a new mission to study the Sun

Recommended for Missions

The Sun, the primary source of energy in the solar system always amazed us.

NASA is preparing for a new mission, named ‘PUNCH’ to study more about the sun and solar events.

  • PUNCH will cost NASA US$165 million and will launch in August 2022.
  • PUNCH stands for ‘The Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere’.
  • The mission probe is composed of four separate probes which will track and capture images of the solar wind leaving the Sun.

Objectives of the PUNCH mission

  • The aim of the mission is to study the complex relationship between the corona and heliosphere.
  • The corona is the Sun’s outer layer.
  • The heliosphere is a ‘giant bubble’ area around the Sun and its planets in the Solar System, created by the solar wind.
  • This study will us understand the causes of solar weather events like coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
  • CMEs can damage satellites and disrupt electrical grids and power systems on Earth. The study will help us predict such events and prepare in advance.

Dipankar Banerjee, a solar physicist from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics is also a Co-Investigator of the PUNCH mission.
