NASA’s Parker Solar Probe gets closest to the Sun

A huge accomplishment for humankind

On Dec-14, 2021, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space exploration accomplished a historic achievement. NASA’s spacecraft “Parker Solar Probe” dipped into the sun’s outermost layer. It collected sample solar particles from the Sun’s atmosphere. Scientists believe this event is as important as landing on the moon.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 to make observations of the Sun’s corona.

What is corona?

Corona is sun’s outermost layer and extends up to thousands of kilometres above the Sun’s visible surface.

The temperature of the Sun is roughly 6000 degrees Celcius however the Sun’s Corona continually emits super hot charged particles as hot as 1 million degrees Celsius. NASA’s spacecraft collected the atmospheric particles in a special instrument called the “Solar Probe Cup”. These samples will enable our scientists to better understand the Sun and how it affects our Solar System.
