White giraffe, the only in the world, gets tracking device for safety

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Is there a white giraffe? And is it really the only one in the world? Yes, let’s read more about it!

We have earlier read about the giraffethe world’s tallest land animal. Giraffes usually have dark brown, orange, or chestnut spots with white or cream-coloured stripes.

However, there is a male giraffe in Kenya, Africa, that is white in colour. The white colour is due to a rare genetic condition called leucism. This condition causes the loss of skin colour.

This is currently the only known white giraffe in the world. There used to be two more but sadly, they were shot by poachers (illegal hunters).

So, in order to keep this rare white giraffe safe, a GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking device has been attached to one of his horns. This device uses satellites to send the giraffe’s location every hour to wildlife rangers.

Officials are afraid that he will also be killed like the others. So, they are trying their best to keep him safe.

Giraffes are found in more than 15 countries in Africa. They are protected as their numbers are becoming less. They are often hunted by poachers for their skin and other body parts.
