Schools reopen

As schools reopen, teachers find learning loss in students

Learning loss in students due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Many schools fully reopened after 19 months from 1 November 2021. This is a step forward for education because many students faced difficulties while attending online classes. But, amidst the reopening, the students have suffered a major loss at learning levels.

With the closure of schools for more than a year, many children have become asocial and stressed mentally. There are also behavioural changes amongst the students. As a consequence, the education system has taken two steps backwards.

Many teachers from different states and union territories said that they have observed learning loss amongst the children. It is especially high amongst the children who were not in touch with schools regularly due to the digital divide.

Moreover, teachers have also noticed psychological and behavioural changes among students. The students who didn’t access online learning during the lockdown have forgotten what they learnt before the pandemic struck.

A report by the Union education ministry revealed that about 29 million students across the country didn’t have access to digital devices (as per the data collected in June 2021). Amongst the 29 million students, 14 million students are from Bihar, 3.2 million from Jharkhand and 3.1 million from Karnataka and Assam each.

So, teachers and schools need to find solutions to help students recover from the learning loss and get back on track with their education.
