Delhi metro could be world’s first train network on 100% solar energy
Recommended for Middle Grades
From 18th April onwards Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started to receive solar power from Rewa Solar Power Project, Madhya Pradesh. DMRC will meet 60% of its electricity needs from this. DMRC is aiming to operate 100% with solar energy by the year 2021. If this happens, DMRC will be the world’s first 100% solar energy network.
Important Deatils – Solar Power
- Initially DMRC will receive 27 MW (Megawatt) power from Rewa. It will increase to 99 MW in upcoming days.
- Power received from Rewa will be used to operate the trains as well as for other requirements such as air conditioning, lighting etc.
- Apart from power received by Rewa, DMRC produces 28 MW of power through roof – top solar power projects which are installed at Metro stations.
- On an average, 345 Million Units (MU) of power is expected to be received from Rewa in a year. In 2018-2019, DMRC used 1092 MU of power for its operations.
- With this shift to solar power, DMRC expects to save ₹ 41 crore.
Solar power:It is the light and heat from sun. This energy can be further converted into other forms of energy such electricity, fuel etc. It is commonly done by installing solar panels on the roof.
