Solar-powered, electric highways in India!

Recommended for Energy

Nitin Gadkari, a minister for the Indian government, said that the government is working on building solar-powered electric highways. These roads will make it easier to charge trucks and buses.

What is an electric highway?

An electric highway refers to a road that provides power to moving vehicles.

The Indian government plans to use electric power to build out India’s public transportation system.  The government is also trying to get toll plazas to use solar power as their main source of energy.

Key facts!

  • Along major highway roads, the Ministry has made new alignments and done route optimization exercises.
  • In addition, they are building 26 expressways from scratch.
  • The minister said that when the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan goes into effect, projects will be approved faster and logistical operations will cost less.
  • Electromagnetic fields are made by a network of electric cables and electromagnetic transmitters that are buried under the road.
  • This energy is collected by a coil inside the car.
  • This coil then creates a voltage that can be used to charge the car’s battery, which could make the car go farther.
  • Electric highways could make cars that use less gas into much more than just a way to get to and from work every day.
  • All of the cables are buried under the road, so there is no chance of a crash or getting an electric shock.
  • The power transfer could work for any vehicle that has the right equipment.
  • On the 1,300-kilometer-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the government is trying to build a separate “e-highway” that will let trucks and buses go 120 kilometres per hour.

India’s First Electric Highway!

  • The first electric vehicle (EV) test drive has started on India’s first electric highway.
  • Highway officials say that the road between Delhi and Jaipur should be ready to use by March 2023.
  • During the one-month trial, the government will try to find answers to important financial questions like power, safety, charging stations, etc.
