Air pollution in Delhi

Air pollution in Delhi & NCR regions leads to school closure

Due to increasing air pollution, the schools in Delhi will remain closed for one week, starting from Monday, 15 November 2021. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announced the news, stating that government and private officials will be working from home. The Chief Minister has also proposed for lockdown in Delhi due to the severe air pollution.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded in Delhi is the worst of this season with an average of 471. Air Quality Index is used to measure the pollution level in the air. The Delhi AQI on Friday is termed as severe by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Therefore, the control board has advised that vehicle usage should be cut down in the capital. This may help in the reduction of air pollution.

Schools closed in Haryana

After Delhi, Haryana announced school closure in 4 major districts – Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonepat and Jhajjar. The schools in these districts will remain closed until 17 November due to the worsening air quality in the regions surrounding Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region). The government has also banned construction and development activities in the state. Moreover, it has also banned has banned trash burning. AQI was recorded as 287 in Gurgaon, 298 and 288 in Faridabad and Sonipat respectively.

Due to the poor air quality index, the Commission for Air Quality Management has asked the states to impose quick measures. These measures include the closing of schools, offices, reduced usage of vehicles and a ban on construction and other activities.
