Grandpa’s Great Escape is a children’ book written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross. It was first published on 24th September 2015 by HarperCollins. Most of the story is true, as it is based on an interesting and exciting part of the author’s life!

The book is about a twelve-year-old boy named Jack and his grandfather, who was a famous RAF pilot in World War II. As he gets older, he seems to think that World War II is still happening, so he calls his grandson ‘Squadron Leader’ and keeps devising new plans to defeat ‘Adolf Hitler’, who was the leader of the ‘National Socialist Party’, more commonly known as the ‘Nazis’. He starts wandering off into places where he knows he can relive his past, like going to a museum and sleeping in the ‘LEGENDARY SPITFIRE AIRCRAFT’! After a few of such escapades, Jack’s Mom and Dad decide that it is better to put Grandpa in a place where he can be watched over, and so came ‘Twilight Towers’. But Jack knew for sure that there was something wrong with that place, and precisely so he needed to get Grandpa out of there at once before it was too late. What was wrong with that place is something that gets revealed when the events in the story are unfolded!
Like any other book of David Walliams, I loved this one too. The bond between Jack and his beloved Grandpa left me teary- eyed. The adventures in ‘Spitfire’ and all the daring escapes from ‘prison’ and later ‘Twilight Towers’ were full of mystery and suspense. I was also taken by surprise when I came across literary devices like alliterations, similes, and onomatopoeias at different points in the story and that too in so huge numbers! But the thing that I like about the book the most beside the story line is that it has loads of illustrations which help in making connection with what is going on in the story.

I recommend ‘Grandpa’s Great Escape” for children who are 9 and above, and those who are daring, brave and have perseverance to withstand suspense. Overall, the book deserves to be given 5 out of 5 stars.
