Children’s Day Message – Nidhi Yadav, Delhi Public School, Mihan

Each child is special. Their uniqueness lies, as much as in their skills and talents, as in their questions, imaginations and sense of wonder. Some children may be good in sports, some in arts, some in science or some in business. Some are orators, others dreamers, some loud and expressive, some shy and conservative. But each child has something special to offer to this world. So, we truly believe that ‘Every Child is Special’.

The UN celebrates World Children’s Day on 20 November while in India, Children’s Day is celebrated on 14 November. This date is the birth anniversary of India’s First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru who believed that children are the real strength and foundation of a nation. We at Curious Times too believe that the holistic development of children is the first step in building a better world and we strive every day to do just that. We are also in constant engagement with the education community – students, teachers and educators. It is our cherished goal to make a meaningful contribution to the community by working and interacting with leaders in the field.

And so, this Children’s Day, Curious Times is delighted to bring you a special message from an eminent educator, Nidhi Yadav. She is the Principal of Delhi Public School MIHAN, Nagpur.

In your inspiring journey as an educator what different types of experiences have you had with children that make you believe every child is special? In my experience, I have come across many children who have surprised me with their unique skills or way of thinking. There were children who were not doing well in academics but when they were given open space to express themselves, they used to express themselves beautifully even in writing. They had a great imagination and could express it in the most fantastic way. We also do come across students who do well in sports but not in academics and they end up doing very well later in life. This is the uniqueness of the child which should be respected and encouraged in the schools.

At times it happens that children end up teaching something valuable to adults. Please share any such experience that you have had. Yes, it happens often. I think the very important things which they teach us are joy and inquisitiveness. This is essential to be a lifelong learner. I have come across many situations where a child has come forward to speak about his/her friend or has taken a stand for the classmate. That solidarity may be irksome at times but it is a value that we cherish much later when we see people pulling down others. I remember reading a passage written by the child which was an answer to a question. The question was, “Which animal or bird you can relate to or would like to be born as if given a chance and why”. The child wrote that I would like to be born as a sparrow so that I can live in my nest, take care of my kids and teach them how to fly. This really touched my heart seeing that the child really gives credit to the mother who was a homemaker. This respect for women is something which we all should have at any age.

What steps should be taken collectively by Schools, Parents, Teachers and the Government to ensure that the special talent and uniqueness in every child is encouraged rather than measuring each child on the same traditional metric? I think the change is coming. In fact, it has been around for quite some time. Most of the schools, parents and exam boards have started encouraging children to explore their individual interests. The curriculum today has a fair balance of co-scholastic subjects. Children’s skills are encouraged, assessed and have become part of overall development and their report card. There is also flexibility now being given in the choice of subjects. The new education policy has all the guidelines based on which the schools can work to provide an environment to encourage a child’s talent. Art integration, blended learning are a few examples that give children different ways to express themselves.

On the occasion of Children’s Day, share your message with your and your children on the Curious Times platform. I always tell my students to celebrate their uniqueness and look for opportunities to learn. A new learning experience widens their horizon and makes them ready for the university called life. Once they develop this habit of learning new, embracing the changes they will grow up into the most balanced individuals. So dear students, keep learning and keep exploring the wonders around you.
