Is caste based reservation system justified?

In India, seats are reserved for socially and economically backward classes, in government jobs, educational institutions, and also in legislative bodies.

In earlier times, backward classes have faced social exploitation to a great extent. They were forced to do menial jobs, forced labor, begar. They were also subjected to the evil practice of untouchability.
Not only socially, but they were even subjected to economic disparities, they were very poor and deprived of education.
Thus, to give them the status of equality with the others they have been provided reservation.

But not all the people of these categories need reservations as few of them today, are in good status. So to provide reservations, only to the needy, the concept of creamy layer in other backward classes is introduced.

Few people argue that they are getting deprived of their rights due to this reservation for inferior classes. They say that few of the undeserving candidates of these classes exploit the opportunities of the deserving candidates of the general category. They argue that merit should only be the criteria for opportunities and not reservation.
But here comes a fact that the “merit” does not only depends on one’s capability or hard work but also depends on access to guidance. Due to their financial and social status, backward classes could not get access to guidance.

According to the available data, the population of other backward classes in India, is itself above 50 percent and the reservation provided to them is 27 percent.
Thus we can say that reservation is justified. But we need to put a cap on this, after few years because till that time conditions will be improved and then the system of the reservation may sound discriminatory.
Currently, we should also introduce the concept of a creamy layer for the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe categories, because, in these categories also not all of them need reservations.
