Solar powered African village

A village in Africa gets its total electricity from solar energy

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Id Mjahdi is a small village in Morocco. But it is also the first village in Africa that uses only solar energy for generating electricity.

What is solar energy?

Solar energy is an important renewable resource. It uses light and heat from the sun and converts it into electricity. It does not produce harmful gases and is good for our environment.

  • Solar energy provides electricity to 20 homes and 50 people in the village of Id Mjahdi.
  • Previously, the villagers used candlelight for studying or working in the evenings.
  • The village did not have a nearby water source. So children often missed school to fill water from a well far away.
  • First a water tower was built for the village. Then a power station was built with 32 solar photovoltaic panels. Photovoltaic panels absorb sunlight to generate electricity.
  • Today, each house has a fridge, TV, water heater, oven and a plug to charge the devices. The solar battery continues to supply electricity up to five hours after sunset.
  • Many public buildings like ‘hamam’ or public bathing space, a pre-school and a women’s workshop area are powered by solar energy.

The solar power company Cleanergy, along with the NGO Cluster Solaire managed this project. They were also helped by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy and French business Intermarche and Petit Olivier.

Id Mjahdi can be used as a model village to help other villages of Africa use solar energy for electricity.
