Our constitution

As we got freedom and got totally on our own on the 15th of August, 1947, the first thing that we needed was our own rule book that would have resulted in basic human rights for the people of our nation and the development of India; as a result, the most prominent and intelligent scholars of the country came together to form a committee to shape our constitution. The head of this committee was Mr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who later became the father of the Indian constitution. So after a long series of meetings, discussions, and analyzing, the Indian constitution was ready to be implemented almost two years after our freedom.

Our constitution was a result of inspiration and adaptations from the constitutions of various other democratic countries. Finally, on 26th of January, 1950 the Indian constitution was implemented and this day is marked as the first Republic Day of India. With this, India became a republic and a democratic country. So 26th January is marked by an important milestone in Indian history and we now celebrate it every year as our Republic Day with pride in our hearts.

With the implementation of our constitution, the people of India got the definition and construct to fundamental rights. This resulted in individual liberty, freedom of conscience, free expression of opinion, freedom of assembly, non-discrimination on the ground of sex, free elementary education and free use of public spaces. In short, we got a Rule Book that gave us the guidance to conduct ourselves as a country .

We celebrate this day with pride and patriotism. All our freedom fighters and martyrs are remembered and honored. Institutions liked schools, colleges, offices and societies organize cultural fests. Our culture and our progress as a nation are celebrated with patriotic dances, songs and skits. A national parade takes place in Delhi, the capital of India. It starts from the president’s residence (Rashtrapati Bhavan) and marches on the Raj Path in front of India gate, then ends at the Red Fort. The parade captures the cultural diversity and defense power of India with cultural costumes, dances, dummy monuments, military parade, tanks and aircraft show at the end. At last, all the celebrations on Republic day throughout the country conclude with the national anthem. I would like to conclude my essay by a quote said by Dr. B R Ambedkar , ” The constitution is not a mere lawyers document , it is a vehicle of Life , and its spirit is always the spirit of Age . ” Wishing everyone a very Happy 73rd Republic Day!
