World Science Day for Peace and Development – 10 November

On 10 November every year, we celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development. This is an international day that highlights the important role that science has in society.

This day aims to keep citizens informed of developments in science. It also focuses on the role that scientists play in helping us understand our amazing planet. And guide us to make our societies more sustainable. Moreover, the day encourages countries to share their scientific knowledge with each other to promote world unity.

Theme for World Science Day for Peace and Development 2021

This year, the theme for the day is Building Climate-Ready Communities. 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development. Climate change is a big issue the world faces today. And so, this year, the theme focuses on the importance of how we can use science to fight climate change. Moreover, it is also important that as a society, science plays an important role in solving the urgent issues we face today.

This year, UNESCO will release the UNESCO Science Report. Moreover, on this day, UNESCO also presents the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Science Popularization. This prize recognises individuals who have contributed to communicating science to society and have promoted the popularization of science. This year, the winner of the award is Jean-Pierre Luminet, an astrophysicist and cosmologist from France.
