You are the Minister of Education. What changes would you make in the current education system?

If I were minister of education I would make several changes to our present education system. It has several flaws and problems that require correction. They must be changed to make them more suitable for the modern times and more efficient and streamlined. With the rise of automation and Artificial Intelligence humans can no longer survive by doing physical work, far too easy to automate, but must do the one thing only humans can do- innovate! Innovation is a skill most sought after by employers. It is also the most important trait of an entrepreneur. More importantly innovating can help advance our species and improve life standards. Inculcating it into students from a young age is crucial and will help bring our schooling system up to date.

Schools exist to serve a purpose- to educate children. But they are also a place where students learn important life skills and are prepared for the real world. Most schools nowadays encourage rote learning and cramming and don’t encourage individual thought. A student should be given a basic understanding of topics by the teacher and then be left to freely explore the subject under the teacher’s guidance.
We need to do away with the old model of ‘learning’ which was relevant in the Industrial Age when the goal of education was to produce clerks, soldiers and factory workers and create an education system that encourages questioning, alternate methods and understanding which is the need of the 21st century.

A student should learn at his or her own pace and no comparisons should be made between students. Only then can students gain the confidence and knowledge to innovate.

Teachers should show students the path to knowledge and help them through rough patches rather than merely handing it to them. This will make them innovative adults later in life. The goal of schools should change from ‘Preparing students for exams’ to ‘Preparing students for life’.
