Curious Times in conversation with Lavleen Shukla

Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.

So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Lavleen Shukla She is the Pre Primary Coordinator at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Kanpur. It aims at the all-round development of the child/individual. It focuses on the current needs and aspirations of a society, its inherent values, concerns as well as broad human ideals.

When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator?

The urge to continuously learn brought me to this world of education. Every motivation is a follow-up of passion. If you are not passionate about some skill or knowledge, then you can never be motivated to learn. Mentoring is always natural, there may be no formal education required to mentor someone. I wanted to become a teacher so that I can make a real difference in children’s lives and my love for children drew me to teaching. As a teacher, you are more than just an educator–you are a mentor and a friend. Being a primary teacher, I get to touch little hearts and somewhere a little child in me is alive because of them. Sharing or exchanging of knowledge is uninterrupted growth for both.

Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success?

Currently, the Teaching profession is not very easy. You have to keep yourself updated with new updates in the various fields. Last year. a sudden drift from whiteboard to laptop was not an easy journey. We have to be techno-savvy as per the demand. This was one of the big challenges. Next, I once had a dyslexic child in my class. The child was very keen to learn and do class activities, I only used to engage her by giving some of the class responsibility, make her read on regular basis, treat her like all others in the class and never made her realize that she can’t do what others can do. It was a big challenge for me because she was not able to read and write properly, was not able to even walk straight but somewhere, I used to tell it ok for her to read, write and walk slow. I used to give her an example of a tortoise that walks slow but reaches its destination. There was a drastic change in her and she improved on many things. Just learnt one thing, that children learn easily if love and trust are shown in them by the teacher. The language of love heals all odds.

What are the changes have you observed over the years in the field of education? Are you happy with these changes?

Education is a tool in society that has become a very crucial part of our lives. Today’s education has changed in many ways over the years. The behavior of students caused by different parenting skills, how teachers teach their classes as well as students’ ability to use fundamentals, media and technology all play a role in how the world of education has evolved. Today schools are more diverse. One big trend is online education. Technology did not even exist a hundred years ago. Now, kids sometimes sit in classrooms in front of computers, or sit at home and do their school work. Teachers, students, and parents have thousands of different learning tools at their fingertips each day, thanks to technology. There are many different programs that help toddlers prepare for the future, for example, ABC Mouse. ABC Mouse is a program designed for children ages 2-7 and helps kids be prepared for kindergarten or help students who are behind in school. Yes, I am happy with the changes. In today’s world, our graduates will compete against the smartest young people from across the globe. Education gives us knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life. Education makes us capable of interpreting things, among other things.

What changes would you like to see in the field of Education? What role can the various stakeholders like the government, teachers, students and parents play in this?

“Education is the key to eliminate gender inequality, to reducing poverty, to creating a sustainable planet, to preventing needless deaths and illness, and to fostering peace. And in a knowledge economy, education is the new currency by which nations maintain economic competitiveness and global prosperity. The change which we can bring about by improving the education system is Skill-based Learning. Rural Education. Gender Neutral Education. Teacher Training. Infrastructure. Subsiding Professional Courses.Basic Computing In Rural Areas. Make Sports compulsory. The stakeholders play an important role in managing schools. They are the partners of the school leaders in making the schools conducive to teaching and learning. In many societies, teachers are looked upon as individuals who can help to bring about positive changes in the lives of people. They are seen as natural leaders who can give advice on various affairs of the communities.”

“The world today is changing at such an accelerated rate and we as educators need to pause and reflect on this entire system of Education .”

“To Motivate the Late bloomers, To mold the Mediocre and To Challenge the Gifted” is the teaching notion.

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great is to love what you do. So the first key to being successful in life is to love and believe in your own selves. Push yourself beyond what you thought you could handle and you emerge on the other side with more bravery, grace and determination than you realized you ever had.
