World Environment Day – Save The Soil

Hi All,

Since the article is on Environment Day, we all know how important the environment is for our one and only earth in turn to us. Just like being healthy is as important is for our body, same way it is the environment for the mother earth. It is each individual responsible to protect our environment.

I will directly pitch into one of the major and most discussed issues of recent days i.e., “PROTECT SOIL”, “SOIL EROSION” ETC. When I first heard of it, I was little confused what is it all about, what is it impact and what are its causes. Let me explain it in a common terms.

Soil Erosion:
The soil particles are loosened or washed away in the valleys, oceans, rivers, streams, or faraway lands. This has been worsening due to human activities such as agriculture and deforestation. Soil erosion is a continuous process that occurs either slowly or at an alarming rate. It results in a continuous loss of topsoil, ecological degradation, soil collapse, etc.

Why we need to save the Soil?
Soil is the basis for sustenance for 7 billion people. It preserves clean water and helps regulate the climate. Soil degradation reduces agricultural yields and threatens farmers’ livelihoods. Soil that has been leached of its nutrients cannot support crops, or plants that prevent desertification. Healthy soil is essential to ensure a steady supply of food and biodiversity. Soil loss translates into widespread poverty and slower economic development. Poor agricultural practices have contributed very heavily to the degradation of cropland worldwide – by 1990, about 38 per cent of all arable land had already been lost. It affects the health of humans, and the growth of plants, decreases soil fertility, increases toxic dust and poisons the underground water table etc.

What should we do to save soil?
As Sadguru says, if you want to fix the soil that you have destroyed, it will take 15-25 years if you go at it aggressively. If you do it without much interest, it will take 40-50 years before you can get the soil to a certain level. If the soil is in a bad condition for that long, which that means two to three generations will go through terrible states of life.
To save soil, reduce the Use of Chemical Fertilizers, Reforestation and Afforestation Should be promoted, Recycle and Reuse Products, Get the Locals Involved, Promote the Use of Natural Manure, etc.,

Final words, kindly promote awareness in your own circle starting from family, friends and relatives about the condition of soil just by talking about it, sharing a powerful message or video regarding soil erosion, and posting on social media. Come on let us join together to “Save Soil” by contributing whatever it is possible from each individual and save soil for future generation.

My message on Curious Times on this World Environment Day, is let us pledge to “Save The Soil”.
